Free School Meals for P6 and P7
Please see details below if you are eligible for Free school meals in P6 and P7
If you don’t meet the conditions for school grants but you get the Scottish Child Payment have a child in primary 6 or 7
you can apply for free school meals. You can’t get school holiday payments, free milk or a school clothing grant.
You’ll need to provide proof that you get the Scottish Child Payment for the children you apply for. If you’ve lost your award letter, call Social Security Scotland free on 0800 182 2222 to ask for a copy.
Apply for free school meals for a P6 or P7 child
If you apply before 16 March 2025, free school meals will start on 17 February 2025. Awards will be valid until your child leaves primary school. This means
P7 children will get free school meals until July 2025
P6 children will get free school meals until July 2026.
Your award will end earlier if you stop getting the Scottish Child Payment.

School Grants
With cost of living on the rise and household income not always meeting it, you may be eligible for free school meals, milk and a school clothing grant to help towards buying school clothes for their children.
All children in primary 1 to 5 receive free school meals automatically, but you need to apply to receive free milk or a clothing grant.
Each award is valid for one school year. The award provides
- each child with one school meal and milk each day they attend school
- a clothing grant payment of £100 for each child.
Find out if you meet the eligibility criteria on the Scottish Government website before submitting your application to City of Edinburgh Council.
Edinburgh School Uniform Bank
Edinburgh School Uniform Bank distribute uniform to students aged 4 – 18 year old living in hardship, who have been referred by schools, family support workers, and other professionals. Please contact us if you need assistance.
Edinburgh Police Fund for Children
The Edinburgh Police Fund for Children helps families buy school footwear and jackets. Grants are normally up to £50 per child. Applications to the Fund are normally made through a third party e.g. social worker, support worker, community nurse, head teacher, police officer etc. Families can self-refer if they do not have a suitable third party worker who could do this on their behalf. In such cases, an assessment visit from a Police Officer would take place.
Kids Love Clothes
Kids Love Clothes give a wardrobe’s worth of quality, donated clothes to every child in the Lothians who really needs it. You need to have an official referral for this service so please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can be of help.
